15 Nostalgic Family Movies for Older Kids

Popcorn for a family movie night

I think we set a record for the amount of movies we watched as a family last year. After Googling “family movies,” searching Pinterest and asking friends for recommendations, we found so many great movies the whole family loved.

However, the best movies we watched this year weren’t new to the adults in the house — they were some of our go-to movies from back in the day. There’s nothing better than watching one of your old favorites with your kid…and they love it too!

Disclaimer: Before I share these movie picks, my kids are 9 and 11 years old, so while I’ve deemed these appropriate for my kids, you may not find them appropriate for yours. These are not all PG — there are definitely parts in some of these movies where I hit the fast-forward button (and was glad I knew the movie so well that I was ready). My advice is to look each movie up on Common Sense Media and decide if it’s right for your family.

Our Old-School Family Movie List

Here are 15 movies we pulled out of the vault to watch with our kids this year:

  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  • Father of the Bride
  • Princess Bride
  • Clueless
  • Legally Blonde
  • BIG
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • 13 Going on 30
  • You’ve Got Mail
  • School of Rock
  • Mrs. Doubtfire
  • The Karate Kid
  • The Cutting Edge
  • The Devil Wears Prada
  • A League of Their Own
Next Up

I’ve started keeping a list on my phone of the family movies we want to watch next because when Saturday night hits we inevitably can’t think of anything!

  • Big Business
  • Baby Boom
  • Goonies
  • My Best Friend’s Wedding
  • Footloose

Help us add to our family movie list — what did you love watching with your family this past year? Here’s a list of books we’ve also read/watched together.

Writing more soon!

Do you have a reading goal for 2022? The past two Do you have a reading goal for 2022? The past two years I’ve read about a book a week, hitting 52 books in 2020 and even more this year. I can happily say this goal is no longer a tough one for me, but a new habit and hobby that bring so much joy to my life. Part of that is this community, so thank you all! I’ll continue reading (and posting about it) just as much next year, but I’ll be focused less on quantity and more on quality. I’m excited to see where another year of reading takes me.

I’d love to hear what your plans for reading are in 2022! And watch for a post on my favorite books of 2021 coming soon!
